EU and Korea: Plastic Pollution Seminar Precedes UN Plastics Treaty Talks in Busan
On November 1, the EU Delegation to the Republic of Korea and the National Assembly Forum on Climate Change hosted a seminar with policymakers, industry leaders, NGOs and civil society representatives, to explore ways to combat global plastic pollution through enhanced international collaboration on effective policies and strong legal frameworks.
As Korea prepares to host the UN Plastics Treaty talks in Busan at the end of November, the seminar negotiations are considered pivotal for establishing new global standards for managing plastic pollution comprehensively through a lifecycle approach.
Maria Castillo Fernandez, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Korea, said: “the EU stands ready to work closely with Korea to develop an ambitious global plastics treaty that will safeguard our planet for future generations”.
With plastic waste levels projected to triple by 2040 from 2016 levels according to the UN, the urgency is clear.
