Strengthening of the Local Management of Natural Resources in the River Basins of Patuca and Choluteca

2004-07 to 2012-06

Major activities addressing a green economy: The natural heritage of Honduras, including forest ecosystems and watersheds, is seriously deteriorated and threatened by unsustainable use of resources due to inappropriate allocation of land and lack of guidelines for land management. GOPA has therefore supported the Secretariat of Technical Cooperation (SRTCO) in strengthening local natural resource management based on land-use planning and integrated river basin management with a focus on decentralization and participation of the population. Major interventions addressing a green economy included environmental education and awareness, assistance to communal forest management, enhancement of entrepreneurial skills, provision of incentives for sustainable management and the introduction of finance mechanisms to upgrade environmental services and to create income for the population
